Daido Market –formerly named Nippan Daido Grocery Store located in Houston, TX. The oldest Japanese grocery in Houston was getting some renovations to include take-out dishes. Their construction partner, Raymond James hired me to create two signs for their bathrooms. These are the final designs. The original designs I presented were very contemporary ‘Kawaii’, Harajuku-inspired illustrations. When I met with the manager, now, the owner of the store in person we both agreed the design should take their inspiration from a more traditional inspirations source. I noticed behind the checkout counter several Kokeshi Dolls. I took my lead from them and presented these new designs. The client loved them. I painted them on wooden discs as a trial run, but the client loved them and we placed them directly on the doors. It worked out well to have a small amount of depth because I painted the sides.
