Daido Market Bathroom Signage

Daido Market

Illustrations for the custom painted bathroom signs at Daido Market (formerly Nippan Daido Grocery)

Daido Marketformerly named Nippan Daido Grocery Store located in Houston, TX. The oldest Japanese grocery in Houston was getting some renovations to include take-out dishes. Their construction partner, Raymond James hired me to create two signs for their bathrooms. These are the final designs. The original designs I presented were very contemporary ‘Kawaii’, Harajuku-inspired illustrations. When I met with the manager, now, the owner of the store in person we both agreed the design should take their inspiration from a more traditional inspirations source. I noticed behind the checkout counter several Kokeshi Dolls. I took my lead from them and presented these new designs. The client loved them. I painted them on wooden discs as a trial run, but the client loved them and we placed them directly on the doors. It worked out well to have a small amount of depth because I painted the sides.
